Transcriber's Notes

Previous

Punctuation, hyphenation, and spelling were made consistent when a predominant preference was found in this book; otherwise they were not changed.

Simple typographical errors were corrected; occasional unbalanced quotation marks retained.

Ambiguous hyphens at the ends of lines were retained.

Page 8: The quotation beginning with “had an irrestible charm” had no closing quotation mark. Transcriber added one after “her voice when she spoke.” It may belong earlier, after “certain piquancy.”

In the Genealogy Chart, “CLEOPATRA VII.” was printed in all-caps boldface. Other all-caps names originally were printed in small-caps.

Footnote 129, originally footnote 3 on page 361: “anti-dated” was printed that way.
