Transcriber's Notes

Previous

Text originally printed in Old English or Black Letter is indicated here by boldface.

Punctuation, hyphenation, and spelling were made consistent when a predominant preference was found in this book; otherwise they were not changed.

Simple typographical errors were corrected; occasional unbalanced quotation marks retained.

Ambiguous hyphens at the ends of lines were retained.

Illustrations without captions at the beginning and end of most chapters are decorative headpieces or tailpieces.

Page 52: “He revolved” was printed that way.

Illustration captions on pages 162 and 188: The Psalm number in “PSALTER, PSALM I.” appears to have been printed as a Roman numeral, but may be an Arabic “1”.

Page 175: “pierced his roul” may be a misprint for “soul”.
