The text in this eBook follows the 1896 book edition of the stories, which differs from the earlier versions published in the Windsor magazine, mainly with respect to punctuation.

Extra pages containing only the chapter title preceding each chapter have been omitted.

In the original, the chapter heads for the first two stories contain chapter numbers using Roman numerals. These have been omitted since the majority of the chapter heads do not contain chapter numbers, nor does the table of contents.
