PLATE I.—A GROUP OF ANGELS. (Frontispiece) This panel from the Uffizi Gallery in Florence is an example of Fra Angelico's most popular work. It is painted in his earliest manner and the figures are stiff and conventional, but the simplicity and beauty that can be found in the group connect it with the paintings of the primitives who were in a sense Angelico's forebears.
