HARRODS SAFE DEPOSIT
For a nominal Rent Harrods will guard your valuables. THEIR VAULTS ARE IMPREGNABLE!
The sure and safe method of preventing loss either from Burglary or Fire is to deposit your valuables in Harrods’ Safe Deposit—it is impregnable to the most skilful or daring thief, and is constructed to withstand the fiercest fire.
Not only is absolute safety assured, but the mind is set at rest, knowing that one’s valuables are in safe custody.
What The Standard says about HARRODS’ SAFE DEPOSIT
“It is satisfactory to note that the steps taken by the well-known West End establishment, Harrods, to meet this requirement in their section of the metropolis has met with well-merited success. ‘It is difficult to estimate the amount of wealth in our keeping,’ said the manager of their Safe Deposit Department. ‘The depositors do not always take us into their confidence, but we learn something occasionally through the inquiries of the insurance companies. During the trouble in Portugal we had a dress-box brought here which was filled with gold plate. Now and again a depositor will display the contents of a chest. During the Coronation festivities this happened in the case of the sister of the Khedive of Egypt, who showed me and allowed me to handle some of the finest pearls in the world, amongst which were specimens as large as pigeons’ eggs. She showed me, amongst other things, the black pearls presented to her by the late King Edward on his return from India. Again, just before the Russo-Japanese war Prince David Beboutoff, when negotiating a loan in this country, deposited here share certificates worth close on a million of money. This was only one deposit out of thousands which take place every year. We have had the title deeds, securities, and other property lodged here of fifty people who have died and whose property has been valued for probate at upwards of £5,000,000.’”
HARRODS’ MODEL DEPOSIT
“An inspection of Messrs. Harrods’ Safe Deposit Department is a revelation of fire and burglar resisting devices. The most cunning thief might as well try to wrest valuable mineral from the moon as steal gold from these vaults, which are a maze of time-locks, steel doors, steel and wrought iron bars, joists, and floors, whilst, outside, the arrangements for swamping the outer skin of the premises with water are perfect. These stores are distinguished as being the first in this or any other country to add to their other conveniences a Safe Deposit Department.”

GENERAL CATALOGUE OF HARRODS CIRCULATING LIBRARY.
Price 2/6 net.
This work forms an instructive subject index to current publications, and to that part of the older literature which is mostly in demand to-day; the second portion, whilst it meets, of course, the wants of the reader who is looking for “something by So-and-so,” also provides an interesting conspectus of the work of an immense number of authors; and the addition to each item of the class to which it belongs and under which it appears in the first part of the work has been described as “a happy conception,” which increases greatly the value of the Catalogue.
As a practical and convenient guide to the books which the most intellectual classes in England are reading, this Catalogue is a document of high literary interest.
The advantages of opening and running an Account at Harrods
¶ It makes you in one sense a partner in the world’s most complete and up-to-date business.
¶ It ensures your every desire receiving the earnest attention of responsible people, and your slightest complaint the personal attention of the management.
¶ It saves you the bother of paying for numerous articles on delivery or at the time of purchase, and just as the whole of your buying can be done under one roof at Harrods, so you will no longer be troubled with a multitude of bills from different tradesmen—a single account at Harrods will cover the whole week’s transactions.
¶ Accounts are rendered promptly, and the housewife wishing to balance her accounts for the week or month is not kept waiting for odd bills to come in.
¶ Drapery goods are freely sent on approval to Customers possessing an account.
¶ Where a deposit is the basis of an account a bonus of one per cent. is allowed upon such a deposit of the value of £20 and upwards, provided each successive deposit be made before the preceding one has been exhausted.
¶ Customers who wish to avail themselves of the convenience of shopping by post, telegraph or telephone (a special telephone staff is on duty all night) will find that an account saves the trouble of making special arrangements for payment on each order.
¶ On receipt of a deposit, or of a satisfactory reference from a bank or a London tradesman, an account can be opened at Harrods. These accounts are rendered and payable every week in town and every month in the country, and special separate accounts (payable monthly) may be opened for drapery and fancy goods.
THE SIMPLIFICATION OF
PRESENTATION AT THEIR
MAJESTIES’ COURTS.
A SOCIAL PILOT.
The latest scheme devised by Harrods to pilot their patrons through the quicksand of social existence will certainly come as a boon and a blessing to a great many people who realise the endless perplexities, anxieties, and those thousand and one worrying details which are attendant upon the honour of presentation at their Majesties’ Court.
Indeed, more than half the pleasure of such a command is marred for a great many people owing to the trouble of getting ready. This is especially true in the case of first presentations or the attendance of Americans or Colonials, who, returning home after many years’ sojourn abroad, are utterly perplexed as to all those unwritten laws that hedge about the ceremony of making their bow to their Sovereign. For explicit and precise as the rules and regulations issued by the Lord Chamberlain are, they by no means relieve the novice of all trouble, responsibility, and care in the matter.
THE SARTORIAL PICK OF EUROPE.
This, however, is exactly what Harrods is prepared to do. Not only do they undertake to supply all the necessary outfit, from a Court dress and regulation train to the necessary feathers and veil, but they are further prepared to save one all trouble concerning those maddening minor details that entail more care and anxiety than everything else put together. With the new system there are no more distracted pursuits of gloves that must be of exactly the correct tint, no more wearying discussions as to the type of shoe to be worn. Under Harrods’ management all is thought out and considered, weighed and decided; one’s own taste being consulted in the first instance when every possible alternative is placed before one. Indeed, with one interview it is quite possible to end all further discussion and trouble. So it is with everything else; for here not only is everything supplied at a moderate cost, but one can take one’s choice from a stock that is larger than any other in London, and one that literally does represent the sartorial pick of Europe gathered together and displayed under one roof.
THE ALL-IMPORTANT COURT COIFFURE.
Even in the matter of coiffure one is equally well catered for. For Harrods have an expert staff of hairdressers who are thoroughly versed in the mysteries of Court coiffure and who know to a nicety all that there is to be known concerning the manipulation of hair to suit the latest style of arranging the regulation plumes and veil—a detail of utmost importance that may, and often does, make or mar the whole general effect of many a Court toilette, for a badly-dressed head is even more damaging than a badly-fitting dress on such occasions.
Court coiffures are dressed at Harrods at 7/6 per head.
SPECIALLY DESIGNED COURT BOUQUETS.
In the same way Harrods will supply the dÉbutante with the correct type of bouquet needed for this all-important occasion. For bouquets, like every other detail connected with personal adornment, call for individual care and attention nowadays. Ordering from Harrods one may be satisfied that this is as carefully dealt with in detail as everything else, and the result will be not only a bouquet suitable for the occasion, but one that has been specially designed with an eye to what is becoming to the height, the figure, and the frock of the lady who orders it.
Court bouquets at Harrods are supplied from 10/6 upward.
MOTOR-CARS AND FOOTMEN AT EVERYONE’s COMMAND.
Even when all these details have been arranged, Harrods is still ready to supply luxuriously appointed motor-cars and landaulettes, which are sent out in the care of experienced chauffeurs and footmen who thoroughly understand the ropes, and who are au fait with the many regulations that govern the setting down and taking up of their Majesties’ guests. On occasion like this it is no small comfort to be able to engage footmen who have season after season performed the same duties, so that there is no fear of confusion, mistakes, or any unnecessary delays.
Harrods’ motor-car hire tariff will be sent to anyone on application. For one evening’s hire to attend a Court the cost is 2½ gns. and 3gns.
THE UBIQUITOUS PORTRAIT.
Even in the case of the ubiquitous souvenir portrait of the great occasion Harrods is ready to render valuable assistance. They have a specially fitted-up studio and expert photographers on the premises who make a spÉcialitÉ of this style of portraiture. In this particular, customers who avail themselves of Harrods’ complete Court catering will be able to save themselves a good deal of trouble and fatigue, as it is an easy matter to arrange to pay a visit to Harrods’ Studio before one’s finery is finally sent home, so avoiding the fatigue of visiting a photographer’s after the Court is over, when one is tired out and consequently looking anything but at the best advantage.
Harrods’ charges for portraits: Boudoir size, £1 13s. for 6 copies; Panel size, £2 12s. 6d. for 6 copies.
MENTAL AND FINANCIAL ECONOMY.
The secret of the success of this complete Court catering lies in the thoroughness with which it is carried out from beginning to end. For, from the moment when the expert designers are first consulted about one’s dress, to the concluding visit to the photographer, everything is made easy and pleasant, all the burden and responsibility being lifted from one’s own shoulders to that of experts specially trained in the many details that contribute to the success of the whole. Moreover, the plan makes for economy in every direction—economy of time, since the arrangements can be made under one roof and at one visit; economy of expense, since we know that whatever be decided upon will be correct and will necessitate no further outlay at the last moment, and, above all, economy of mental wear and tear. Indeed, so easy is it all that one may be forgiven tending toward a comfortable laziness in regard to social duties. For Harrods’ service makes it so simple to avoid unnecessary social fatigue and difficulties that it is not surprising to find every year more and more folk are availing themselves of the facilities which are offered to them.

How Harrods have developed
Shopping by Telephone
Since its inception Harrods’ Telephone Order Office has proved an unqualified success. Being efficiently organised as a special department, all orders are carefully taken, and the tantalising treatment often meted out to orders by telephone, where they are dealt with in haphazard manner, is entirely avoided.
The staff of Order Clerks is a specially trained force always in attendance—Day and Night—to attend to customers’ enquiries and orders.
Orders ’phoned during business hours are promptly executed and dispatched, and those received after business hours are sent by the early morning delivery vans and mails next day.
