In an Army Medical Department Circular, dated 27th May, 1855, it was announced that the Secretary of State for War had decided the following “Field Dressing” should form part of every British soldier’s kit on active service, so as to be available at all times and in all places as a first dressing for wounds:— Bandage of fine calico, 4 yds. long, 3 in. wide.
