PREFIXES.

A favourite way of building words is by the use of prefixes. Generally speaking, these are of English, French, Greek or Latin origin—it being understood in this connection that French is but a modified form of Latin.

English Prefixes.

Inseparable prefixes have no meaning in themselves and cannot stand alone. The most important are:—

A-, on: away, alive; at: ahead: of: akin.

And-, against (Greek anti-): answer (sweri-an, to declare).

Be-, old form of by: betimes, bypath; in verbs: bedaub (daub all over), bewail (wail for), benumb (make numb).

For-, intensifies the meaning, (thoroughly): forbear, forlorn, forswear, forbid (command against), forego.

Fore-, first, before: foresight, forejudge.

Mis-, wrong, wrongly: misdeed, miscall, mislead.

Un-, not: unholy, unafraid. In verbs, it indicates the reverse of the simple verb: unbind, unfold, unmask.

With-, against, (from): withstand, withers (of a horse), withhold.

Separable Prefixes.

After, after: aftergrowth, aftermath (= after the mowing), afterthought.

All (old Eng. al), all: almost, alone.

Forth, forth: forthcoming.

In (French en), in: inborn, illusion, import, irruption; encase, enclose; entwine, embody, employ; enable = to make able, embitter.

Off or of, off, from: offal = what falls off, offspring.

On, against, towards: onset, onslaught, onward.

Out has a sense of direction or surpassing, (beyond): outcast, outpost, outrun, outshine; utter, utmost (i.e., outer, outmost).

Over, over, above: overhead, overcoat, overturn, overspread, over-bold.

Through = thorough: throughout, thoroughfare, thoroughbred, through-ticket.

Twi, two, double: twice, twilight = double or doubtful light, twill, twin = double, twine, twist = two strands twisted.

Under, below, lower: underhand, underlie, underneath, undertone.

Up, up: upland, upshot, upbraid, uphold, uprise, upward.

Latin (and French) Prefixes.

A-, ab-, (ab-s-), away from: avert, absent, ab-s-tract; Fr., avaunt.

Ad-, (Fr. a-) (-d is often changed because of the influence of the following consonant), to: adapt, abbreviate, accord, affect, aggression, allude, annul, arrogate, attain; Fr., achieve, acquaint, amount.

Amb- or am-, around, round about, (both): ambition (lit. going about, canvassing), ambiguous, ambidextrous, amputate (to cut around).

Ante-, before: antedate, ante-room, anticipate; Fr., an- in ancestor = antecessor.

Bis- and bi-, twice, two: bias (= two-faced), biped, bisect, biscuit (= twice baked).

Circum-, around: circumference, circuit, circulate, circumvent.

Cum-, with, takes the forms com-, con-, col-, co-, cor-, under the influence of the letter following: compound, concord, collect, coÖperate, correct, counsel.

Contra-, against: contradict; Fr., controvert, counterfeit.

De-, down, from: decline, deduct, decamp. It is negative in derange, deform, destroy; intensive in declare, deprave, despoil, desolate, desiccate.

Dis-, di-, asunder, separation: disarm, diffuse, disown, divorce; Fr., des-, de- in defer, defy, delay, descant.

Ex-, e-, out, out of, proceeding from: exclude, exhale, ex-governor, extract, educe, elect, emanate, evade.

Extra-, beyond: extraneous, extraordinary, extravagant.

In-, in, into, on: infer, invade, invent. It also becomes il-, im-, ir-, before certain consonants, as illusion, improve, irrigate.

In-, not: incapable, illiberal, impious, irrelevant, ignoble.

Inter-, intro-, among, between, within: interfere, intervene, introspection.

Male-, bad, ill, wrong: malcontent, malpractice, maltreat.

Mis-, ill, wrong: misadventure, misalliance; Fr., mischief.

Non-, not: nonage, nonentity, nonsense.

Ob-, toward, facing, against: object, obstruct. It also becomes oc-, of-, op-: occur, offer, oppose.

Pene-, almost: peninsula, penult.

Per-, through, often intensive, throughout, thoroughly—and so wrongly: perspire, pervade; persist, perturb, pervert; pellucid, pilgrim (see ager). Fr. par-: pardon.

Post-, after: postdate, posthumous, post-mortem, postscript.

Pre-, before: precede, precursor, preËmpt, premature, premise, prevent.

Preter-, beyond, more than: preterite (of past time), preternatural.

Pro-, before, for, forward: proceed, proconsul, prologue, pronoun, provide; por-tend. Fr., pur: purchase, pursue.

Re-, red-, back, again: rebel, recede, recover, redeem.

Retro-, backwards: retroactive, retrograde, retrospect.

Se-, sed-, apart: seclude, secrete, sed-i-tion (a going apart), segregate.

Sub-, under, from under: subject, subtract. It also becomes suc-, suf-, sug-, sum-, sup-, sur-, sus-, as in succor, suffer, suggest, supplant, suspend; subdivision (i.e., lower), summon (sub = slightly), surreptitious.

Super-, above, beyond: superfine, supernatural, superposed; Fr., sur-, surname, surpass, surtout (= over all).

Trans-, across: transcend, transient; tradition, traverse; Fr., tres-, trespass.

Ultra-, beyond: ultramarine, ultra-radical, ultra-tropical.

Vice-, in place of: vice-consul, vice-president, viceroy; vicar.

Greek Prefixes.

A-, an- (before vowels), not: a-nom-alous = ir-regular, an-archy, an-onym-ous, apathy, atheist; a-morph-ous = formless, an-aemia = bloodlessness, an-odyne = something that relieves pain.

Amphi-, on both sides, double: amphibious, amphitheatre.

Ana-, up, back, anew: anatomy, analysis, anagram, analogy, anathema.

Anti-, against: antarctic, antidote, antipathy, antipodes, Antichrist, anticlimax.

Apo-, from, away from, off: apology, apostle, apostrophe, aphelion, apogee (ge = earth), apostasy.

Arch-, chief: archangel, archbishop, archfiend, archi-tect.

Auto-, self: autocrat, autograph, automobile, autonomy, automatic, aut-opsy.

Cata-, down, (thoroughly): cataract, catastrophe, catechise, catalogue, (a complete numbering).

Dia-, through, (between): diagonal, diagram, dialogue, diapason, diaphragm.

Dis-, di-, twice, doubly: dissyllable, di-phthong, dilemma.

Dys-, ill, bad: dysentery, dyspepsia.

Ec-, ex-, out, out of: ec-centric, ec-lipse, ec-stasy, exegesis, exodus, exorcise.

En-, in: energy, emblem, emphasis, empiric, encomium, encyclic, endo-gen.

Epi-, upon, to: epidemic, epigram, epistle, epitaph, ep-hemeral, ep-och.

Eu-, well: eucharist, eulogy, euphemism, euphony, ev-angel = good news.

Exo-, outside, without: exo-gen, exoteric, exotic.

Hemi-, half: hemicycle, hemisphere, hemi-stich.

Hyper-, over, beyond measure: hyperbole, hypercritical, hypertrophy.

Hypo-, under: hypocrite, hypodermic, hypothesis, hyp-hen (= one).

Meta-, after, between, (changed for): metaphor, metathesis, metamorphosis, metonymy, met-hod = after a way (hodos).

Para-, beside, near by, contrary to: parable, paradox, parallel, parish, parody, par-helion.

Peri-, around, near: period, perimeter, perigee (ge = earth), perihelion.

Pro-, before, for: problem, prologue, prophet = interpreter.
