DEFENDERS OF DEMOCRACYTo the brave men and heroic women of Lanett, Shawmut, Langdale, Fairfax and Riverview, who have gone forth to do battle for the democracy of the world: and to the loved ones they have left behind, this book is affectionately dedicated. This book is made possible by the generous co-operation of the officers of the West Point Manufacturing Company and Lanett Cotton Mills. It is the result of the combined efforts of the War Service Station in each mill locality to pay at least a feeble tribute to the gallant doughboy who enlisted in the cause of right and democracy. It is hoped that, as the years pass by, these crusaders and their posterity may find an increasing interest in this memorial to their heroism. Also, it has been thought advisable to preserve a record of the accomplishments of all those patriotic forces which contributed their part towards the successful termination of the greatest conflict in history. It would not be amiss to call particular attention to the War Service Stations, under whose leadership was fostered practically all of the patriotic work consummated by those at home. That these Stations were a comfort to our boys—in their interest and solicitude for them—is attested by the letters reproduced. PRESIDENT WOODROW WILSON Commander-in-Chief United States Army |
