PREFACE.
Since this Work was commenced the compiler has been induced at the solicitation of numerous subscribers, to alter the plan of it, by issuing a Street Edition only, at a Reduced Price, viz., 2s., and to publish Two Editions in each year; the first in the early part of December, and the second in the first week in July.
The following circumstances seem to justify the above mode of publication:—Railway companies, by taking so much house property for their use, are frequently making changes in this as well as in other parts of London; private residences in every eligible position are converted into business premises; the Board of Works continue to make new streets, &c., alter the names of old ones, and re-number house property to a great extent. Then again there is a continual migration, and a rapid increase in this locality, which in many respects, make any Directory six or eight months old comparatively useless, and even worse than useless, hence the reasons for abridging this Work and publishing Two Corrected Editions in one year at a little more than the price of one.
Purchasers of the first may exchange it for the second or July Edition for 1/6.
The map published with this Work is valuable, inasmuch as it contains nearly the whole of the alterations made in the District up to September last, and the newest of any now before the public, being worth at least one-half of the price charged for the Directory.
The proprietor has carefully compared this Work with those which are supposed to take in all London, and as far as this District is concerned, whether as regards New Streets, &c., or the including the whole of the population, there can be no doubt that the “West London Street Directory” is indispensable both to the man of business and to private families.
The Advertisements in this Edition will be inserted in the one published in July free of charge.
In conclusion, the proprietor thanks his subscribers and advertisers for their support, and regrets that the work is late, but hopes through the new arrangement that he will be punctual in future.
